SUBMISSION DOES NOT GUARANTEE ACCEPTANCE however SF is an E format digital publication so can be an indeterminate number of ‘pages’ so ALL submissions that are considered to be acceptable will be included
Submitted texts / artworks that are accepted will be included in that years annual issue (which will always be issued on 01/01 the following year
ISSUE TWO / 2016 will be issued on 01/01/2016 - SUBMISSIONS / CONTRIBUTIONS OPEN UNTIL 01 / 12 / 2015
[ submissions received after December 1 may still be included or may be included in the following issue ]
TEXT SUBMISSIONS
TEXT LENGTH 01 to 350 words (approx) – the more text there is the less space there is for graphic page layouts / accompanying images. Submission texts should be considered to comprise an SF ‘page’ (works slightly over 350 words may still be acceptable)
An author can submit numerous texts (within reason – SF would ask the author to limit their submitted texts to a number they feel would not be too many to editorially process)
Each submitted text should be submitted as a SEPARATE FILE
The submitted texts should be Speculative Fiction [SF] or Speculative Speculative Fiction [SSF] by which I mean text that could potentially be ‘read’ as SF but are not quite 'pure SF'
A text can be a self contained ‘fragment’ – SF wishes to permit the SF reader SPECULATIVE SPACE in which they can speculate
The submitted texts ‘meaning’ does not necessarily need to be ‘apparent’ to the reader (although the SF editor may request that you explain your text privately as part of the process of consideration to the submitted text)
HOBBITS ARE PROHIBITED
EXPERIMENTAL IS GOOD
ANYONE can potentially submit / participate. SF will happily consider potential texts from ANY author (established/published or unpublished) - It is the individual text that is important NOT the provenance of the text
If the text contains any directly appropriated text parts that are not written by the author please indicate those text parts and give a brief explanation as to why they are being used (if the appropriation is conceptually acceptable the submitted text will still be considered acceptable)
Please include with your submission >
AUTHOR NAME (which can be whatever name you wish to have as author of the text)
TEXT TITLE (or if it is UNTITLED please indicate this)
SUBMISSIONS should preferably be WORD DOC files in ARIAL 10 point
>
ADDITIONALLY the submitting author can also include suggestions of a preferred graphic layout (or if familiar with graphic design software submit their own demo layout as a JPEG or PNG – 1435x2200 pixels) this will not be considered to be a finished ‘page’ merely guidelines / suggestions of how you visualise the finished ‘page’ should look / function
It is intended that a dialogue will occur between the submitting author and SF as to how their work is presented on a ‘page’
The submitting author will ALWAYS have final approval in this matter and if their design requirements prove to be irreconcilable with SF or they remain unhappy with the presentation of the submitted text they can withdraw their submission at any time
It has also been found that a brief suggestion of the visual image accompaniment (if any) can be helpful so can also be included as either a descriptive text or numbered images (JPEG or PNG) with the same title as the submitted text
Please note that this is intended as only an indication of image content and appropriated submitted images may not actually be used (or potentially modified in some way if they are)
Please suffix the image file title with SELF if they have been directly created by you (all other images will be considered to be appropriated and may in that form be subject to copyright restrictions – see below)
For self created images see also IMAGE SUBMISSIONS below
Please do not be intimidated - both suggested graphical layouts / image accompaniment are totally optional to the submission of a text and are not considered necessary to a submission (a submitting author may even prefer SF to make these visual decisions on their behalf – with their final approval of course)
SF is a non profit publication to be distributed as an online download for FREE therefore cannot PAY for any submission
While SF can be downloaded / distributed for FREE (transferred / duplicated in its entirety for non profit purposes) ALL submissions (both text and image) are entirely owned by the submitting author / artist and cannot be reproduced elsewhere without the authors direct permission (any submitted material remains wholly the authors / artists copyrighted property)
COPYRIGHTED APPROPRIATED IMAGES
While SF endorses the appropriation of any found image some images may be considered to be ‘owned’ (especially ARTWORKS) additionally appropriated photographs will usually require some alteration so their appropriation is not direct. However as SF is a non profit publication which is to be distributed FREE images that have entered the public domain are considered to be (within reason) FREE for appropriation
It seems foolish to worry about images when we are constantly bombarded by images (uploaded and in print) so SF takes a considered but relaxed approach to the appropriation of images that have entered the public domain through their distribution (the exception of course being artworks that are considered to be owned by the artists who produced them)
IMAGE / ARTWORK SUBMISSIONS
ALL artwork submissions should be prepared at 2127x3261 pixels at 360 DPI (PSD / TIFF) however should be submitted for consideration as a JPEG or PNG – 1435x2200 pixels / 360 DPI (if the artwork is accepted the submitting artist will be asked to email SF with a JPEG / PNG of the image in its FULL 2127x 3261 / 360 DPI dimensions)
Again the submitted work can be SF or SSF (see above)
Images / artworks that do not inherently conform to the given dimensions (see above) should be ‘placed’ within this format (with considered borders / alignments)
ARTIST / AUTHOR / DESIGNERS can potentially submit a finished ‘page’ but are asked to contact SF beforehand to engage in a discussion of their potential ‘page’ (which will hopefully save them any unnecessary labour producing a ‘page’ which may be considered inappropriate for inclusion). The above dimensions for ARTWORK / IMAGES also apply to the production and submission finished ‘pages’
Please refer to ISSUE ZERO as an indication of the SF ‘look’ (while ISSUE ZERO is entirely monochromatic colour images will be considered for subsequent issues)
ADDITIONAL
Anyone wishing to become more involved with SF and contribute ideas to the editorial / conceptual aspects of SF are encouraged to contact SF and engage in a dialogue regarding this (the same for anyone who wishes to directly participate in these processes)
ANY and EVERY contribution to SF will be considered / discussed
OTHER MEDIA
SF will (on its SF website) include links to any appropriate web hosted (or downloadable) MEDIAWORKS that do not conform to its E-PRINT format (videoworks / audioworks / apps and such) and are happy to direct SF readers to anything interesting that you would like to share through SF
This can be your own works or any works you happen across that you feel may be of potential interest to readers of SF
QUESTIONS
If there is anything in the submissions guide you would like clarifying (or perhaps explaining more clearly) please do not hesitate to contact SF
